We’ll miss you, Jim Boyd

Sad news from Carstens Publications today that noted rail photographer and former editor of Railfan & Railroad magazine, Jim Boyd, has died.

From the Railfan & Railroad web site:

It is with deep sadness that we report that Jim Boyd has passed away. Jim started with Carstens Publications working on Flying Models and later Railroad Model Craftsman. Jim served as editor of Railfan & Railroad from the magazine’s inception in 1974 until 1998, and continued as editor emeritus and author of the popular Camera Bag column until his passing. We’ll pass along details as they become available.

Jim was more than a railfan, editor and author – he was a major personality within the railway hobby. I’ve always enjoyed his photographs and stories, and count his book Outbound Trains from Boston Mills Press as one of the great surveys of North American railroading in the 1960-1970 time span. His name also graces the covers of many titles from Morning Sun Books, on a wide variety of railroads and regions – a testament to his reach and scope.

It’s no understatement to say Jim inspired a generation of railfans and provided valuable information to modelers. He will be missed.
