Narrower Minded – Broader Horizons
In this episode…
Bob Brown, Publisher and Editor, Narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette.
Bill Kaufman, VP Special Projects, National Model Railroad Association.
The Standard for Narrow Gauge Enthusiasts
There’s just something special about rails spaced less than 4’-8.5” apart, and there’s no better place to discover the magic of slim gauge than in the pages of The Narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette.
The Gazette is closely associated with just one person: its founder, editor and publisher Bob Brown. Through the years Bob has assembled around him a closely-knit group of regular feature writers, which lends a sense of family to this bi-monthly publication. Bob talks to Jim Martin about the longevity, and future, of his magazine.
New Directions for the Standard Setters?
The National Model Railroad Association celebrated 75 years this past July. The NMRA’s contribution to the hobby is without question: The fact that our couplers, wheels, track, DCC decoders and more work, regardless of manufacturer, is due in no small measure to the association’s standards setting and negotiating/mediation prowess.
There was a time when the NMRA was the only option for enthusiasts looking to join an organization. Today, that’s not the case: There are Special Interest Groups (SIGs), newsgroups, historical societies, and informal organizations knitted together via the web and social networks. Where does the NMRA fit into this? And how can the NMRA at the national level help support the efforts of those toiling in the association’s Regions and Divisions?
To shed some light on these questions, Bill Kaufman, the first holder of the newly created office of Vice President of Special Projects at the NMRA, talks to Trevor Marshall.
