Inspiration – Now and For The Future
In this episode…
Andy Sperandeo, Editor, Great Model Railroads.
Mike Hamer, Teacher and Author.
Inspiration for current model railway enthusiasts
What makes a model railroad “great”?
For the past two decades, Andy Sperandeo has been helping us answer that question in his role as Editor of the Great Model Railroads annual from Kalmbach Publishing Company. In that time, some things about layout design and construction have changed a lot, while others have remained timeless.
Andy talks to Trevor about the evolution of the hobby since that first issue hit the stands… and provides insight into the 2011 edition, which is now on sale.
Inspiring the next generation of enthusiasts
It’s often said, “We need more young people in the hobby” – and it’s true. Like any pursuit, the livelihood of model railroading depends upon the steady influx of fresh enthusiasts. But a home layout is carefully built, often with delicate details – and even a modest railway represents a considerable financial investment. Many enthusiasts may be concerned about opening up their layout to a group of kids.
Not Mike Hamer. Mike is a well-known modeler – his HO Scale Boston & Maine – Western Route has appeared in both Great Model Railroads and Model Railroad Planning – and he loves to show off his efforts to school groups, cubs/scouts, and others.
Mike talks to Jim about how to organize such a group, how to manage the kids to keep the layout safe, and other things a hobbyist can do to promote model railroading to the next generation of enthusiasts.
