Today I finished up two more freight motors for my S scale version of the Niagara St. Catharines and Toronto Railway: GE steeple cab Number 20 and Number 21 – a Baldwin-Westinghouse clone. They join the three sisters – NS&T 8, 15, and 19 – in the car barn yard on Welland Avenue in St. Catharines.
Like the three sisters, Number 20 was built from brass photo etchings produced several years ago by William Flatt. I added parts from William, as well as Precision Scale Co, BTS, River Raisin, and other S scale sources.
Number 21 is the outlier in the above photo. It started as a built-up but unpainted Baldwin Westinghouse Class D brass kit from Model Railroad Warehouse for a Lake Erie & Northern (CP Electric Lines) freight motor. I bought this from a friend and after debating what to do with it, finally took the plunge and extensively re-detailed it, using many of the same sources of parts.
I’m very happy with how these turned out.
I still have two more motors that I would like to build. I have etchings and parts for NS&T Number 17 – an ex-Ontario Hydro steeple cab that was part of the fleet used to build the Queenston Power Canal. I also have all the parts to build NS&T Number 18 – a Baldwin Westinghouse Class B freight motor.
(That said, I don’t have the MRRW Class B kit: I have an unbuilt Class D. I would dearly love to find an S scale MRRW kit for the smaller Class B so I can model NS&T Number 18 correctly. If you have one that you don’t really need, let’s talk! I would be happy to purchase it – or trade the Class D kit, new in the bag.)
