The typical railway modeller gets excited about the newest releases from their favourite manufacturer. Or, if they’re in S scale (where “S” is for “Sorry”), they often commiserate with each other about how, if only a manufacturer would produce such-and-such a model, their hobby lives would be complete.
Me? I get excited when I find a local source for 0.060″ thick styrene by the 4×8 foot sheet.
I picked up two such sheets this week from a local graphics company. I don’t even yet know how I’m going to use them – but in the past, I’ve used such sheets for everything from building cores to backdrops. So I know they’ll be used.
Regardless of whether I build one layout or several, I know I’ll have plenty of buildings. I like building structures. I think it scratches my itch for architecture – also known around my house as the road not taken.
I’m delighted by my progress to date on the NS&T Car Barn, for which I used 0.060″ styrene as the core for all walls and roof sections. Incidentally, that car barn is my first scratch-built brick structure (although I’ve built many wood-framed models using similar techniques) and now that I have a taste of counting courses, I’m looking forward to building more.
I’m positively giddy with excitement!
