Reviving the sector plate

Setting up staging for the NS&T

When we moved 3,000 km west in 2020, I had to consign most of my last layout – Port Rowan in 1:64 – to the dumpster. But I saved the sector plate that served as the layout’s connection to the rest of the North American rail network – and now, I’ve reassembled this very useful bit of staging and the equipment storage drawers that went with it.

This is a good first step as I look to expand my version of the Niagara St. Catharines & Toronto Railway beyond the Welland Avenue car barn.

There is a bit of moving damage to address – but it’s limited to the rails at the back end of the sector plate. I’m pleased that the important end – the end that connects the plate to the rest of the layout – survived intact.

The important end – damage-free. Huzzah! I’ll remove the stubs of rail on the layout side of this connection and lay fresh rail once I’ve connected the sector plate to some new benchwork.
The back of the sector plate was not so fortunate. But it’ll be an afternoon’s easy work to replace the damaged rail.

In addition to setting up this staging area, I’ve also filled several of the equipment drawers with rolling stock. In the process, I’ve emptied seven double-sized banker’s boxes, which has opened up a lot of space in the room. Plus, I’m pleased to discover that all my rolling stock survived the move without damage, although some pieces need a quick trip through the shop because I moved before I was able to finish prepping them for the layout.

I’m on that now. This is progress – and it’s good.
