Bydemill trial 1

With its work done, the crew of Dean Goods 2537 haul their short train out of Bydemill. The first formal operating session is in the books.

On Friday – after a fish’n’chips lunch at Gibson’s – I welcomed my friends Cal, Gordon, and Martin to Bydemill, circa 1905. We spent an enjoyable afternoon working a short goods train to this terminal on the Great Western Railway, inspired by Highworth – located a few miles northeast of Swindon in Wiltshire.

This was the first time I’d hosted an operating session on my first-ever attempt at a 7mm GWR model railway – and I’m pleased to say that for the most part it went off well. I had a mysterious issue with a wireless throttle, but other than that the trains ran well. My three friends seemed engaged with the layout and we had some great conversations.

I’ve also come away with some notes for next time – some supplied by my three friends, and others based on my own observations. That’s what these early trials are all about. I’ll share some of the learning points in future posts.

Thanks guys – I look forward to the next time!
