The story of my multi-gauge test track

What a strange collection of scales, gauges, and prototypes. No wonder I needed a multi-gauge test track.

About a year ago, I enhanced my workshop with a multi-gauge test track, and it was one of the smartest things I’ve done in the hobby since moving in 2020. I’m thrilled by how much better this has made installing DCC decoders, finding mechanical faults – and even just enjoying running some of the equipment I still own from previous hobby projects.

Wiring a multi-gauge test track can break your brain. This octopus definitely wanted to fight.

I’ve described, in detail, how I built this vital piece of workshop equipment – and the story is now available in the January, 2025 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman magazine:

As an aside, I’m pleased to share the issue with my friend Jim Martin, who has a feature on building a mill complex for his layout. It’s also wonderful to see well-known modellers such as Mike Confalone now sharing their work in RMC.

The magazine has grown to become the undisputed home of thoughtful, accomplished modelling of North American subjects and I’m grateful RMC continues to publish my work.
