GWR water crane

GWR 0-4-2T 528 pauses for a drink at the water crane. This was an enjoyable kit to build.

I wanted a quick project to work on between other commitments over the holidays, and this lovely kit for a Great Western Railway water crane fit the bill. I acquired this kit, produced by Skytrex, from my friend Simon Dunkley. The details were crisply produced and the instructions straightforward. I built the crane in a couple of hours then spent a few days painting and weathering it.

As shown above, I’ll position the crane on the tail track, beyond the station platform and cattle dock on my 7mm layout, Bydemill. It’s a bit of an unusual placement – on the platform itself would be more typical, I’m told – but this is a ground-level kit and this is a natural pausing point for every train, as crews run their locomotives around the consist. Plus, it adds some visual interest at the far end of the line.

I’ll have to find a suitable water tank to place in the background of this scene.

Thanks again, Simon. What a fun project this was!
