Bydemill workspace

A slide-out shelf gives operators a place to sort wagon tags while shunting at Bydemill.

While running trains with friends a couple of months ago, it became apparent that operators needed a place to sort wagon tags when working Bydemill – my 7mm scale, Edwardian era, Great Western Railway layout.

I’d built a slide-away shelf for the DCC system in January and it worked well, so I decided to do something similar further down the aisle. I acquired another pair of drawer slides from Lee Valley Tools and a 12″ x 48″ project panel from a local big box home improvement store. This time, I decided to leave the shelf the full 48″ width, and mount it close up under the fascia. It’s only to be used for sorting wagon tags so it doesn’t need much clearance – and it’s located in front of the space where I store the layout’s removable staging when it’s not in use.

I look forward to our next operating session!
