
The Great Western Railway has experimenting with alternatives to traditional, locomotive-hauled passenger trains – and given its proximity to the big shops at Swindon it’s no surprise the Bydemill branch is frequently used to test new equipment.
The citizens of Bydemill hope that’s the case here, as their customary train to market (a rake of venerable carriages hauled by a small tank engine) has been replaced by GWR 68 – a steam-powered, self-propelled railcar.
