On a day in one of the first summers of the 20th Century, a goods train arrives at Bydemill – the terminal station on the short Great Western Railway branch line of the same name.

The footplate crew runs their Dean Goods locomotive around their consist to shunt the goods shed, then runs around again to work the goods yard. Directly behind the locomotive, a Pooley Van – a portable workshop used to maintain and calibrate the railway’s weigh scales – stands out in an otherwise unremarkable train.

With the work completed, the crew heads back to Swindon.

I’ll continue to explore Bydemill through a sepia lens.
