Discussing layout design in Calgary

I’ve been invited to speak at the Calgary Model Railway Society‘s Fall Mini Meet and AGM on October 5th – and I’ll use the opportunity to talk about the layout design issues one faces when choosing to model an obscure prototype in a niche scale.

My example will be my modelling of the Niagara St. Catharines & Toronto Railway in 1:64, but the lessons learned that I’ll share apply equally to any railway subject beyond the well-supported mainstream – from obscure prototypes in HO or N, to pretty much anything in S or O, in standard or narrow gauge.

I’ll describe the design decisions I’ve made, the skills I’ve had to develop, and why – at least for me – having a second layout in my space (the Great Western Railway in 7mm scale) helps me stay motivated when I encounter modelling problems.

This is a members-only meet – but if you live in the greater Calgary area and are not a member of the society, perhaps you should consider it? Amongst other things, the society mounts Supertrain – a huge annual train show.

I’m grateful to the Calgary Model Railway Society for inviting me, and I look forward to meeting the members on October 5th.
