Midday goods :: Feb 28, 1905

An intrepid photographer climbed onto the roof of the signal box to capture this goods train working at Bydemill.

The crew on the midday goods working sorts wagons as it serves the goods shed at Bydemil.

The crew has pulled the brown box van from the shed and is in the process of dropping it on the platform track. The grey van will then be hauled back into the goods yard and propelled into the shed for unloading.

Meantime, the rest of the outbound train (two private owner coal wagons, a brown open wagon, and a brake van) has been assembled and tucked out of the way on the loop. The catch point has been set to prevent these wagons from rolling onto the main.

Once the shunting is done, the crew will collect the outbound train and move it onto the platform track so the signalman can clear the starter signal and the train can head back to Swindon.

Nothing novel – no fancy switching puzzles or other artifice. Just an oft-repeated process in a typical Great Western Railway branch line terminal, captured by an Edwardian era rail fan.

Enjoy your weekend. And if you have a layout, run a train.
