CNR GS Gons

The first two of a forthcoming fleet

Last week, I put the first two of many CNR GS Gons into service on my 1:64 version of the Niagara St. Catharines & Toronto Railway.

These are 3D Printed kits developed and manufactured by my friend and fellow member of the S Scale Workshop, Simon Parent. The kit builds into a beautiful model of a much-needed car for anyone modelling the Canadian National Railway system.

I’ve been busy with layout building and other activities, so I farmed out the work on these to my friend Pierre Oliver. He built and painted them, while I weathered them inside and out.

Stone loads have scrubbed the paint off the interiors, exposing bare steel. A slight patina of rust completes the effect.

By all accounts Pierre enjoyed building these cars and is looking forward to doing more. That’s good, because I ended up buying ten kits from Simon when he released them a few years ago.

Fortunately, the NS&T served Walkers Quarry – a large gravel operation on the east side of the Welland Canal in Thorold, Ontario. I don’t have many photos of this operation but one shows a freight motor working a sizeable string of cars loaded with stone.

I look forward to pulling cuts of loaded GS Gons from a spur representing the lead to the pit, running them over a scale track, and setting them out for interchange with the CNR.
