Boxes and gons

Earlier this month I took delivery of a few more S scale freight cars, built for me by my friend Pierre Oliver.

CPR and GCW boxcars

The Canadian Pacific Railway boxcar is a Kaslo Shops kit for a PS-1. It has a resin body plus photo-etched details. The PS-1 was a common boxcar back in the era I model, but it hasn’t been well represented in 1:64. This resin kit is lovely, but out of production and hard to find now. It would be great if a manufacturer produced a decent plastic kit for these in 1:64 – but that’s about as likely as riding a unicorn: Mass market S scale is pretty much a thing of the past.

The Chicago Great Western boxcar started as a plastic kit from Pacific Rail Shops for a 1937 AAR car. Several years ago, the Railroad Prototype Modelers meet in the Chicago area produced mini-kits for modelling these cars – and included a version in S scale. The modeller supplied the boxcar, while the mini-kit included detail parts and decals to modify and finish it.

A growing fleet

Pierre also built two more Canadian National Railways GS Gons for me, from kits manufactured by fellow S scaler and friend Simon Parent. I now have four of these: the newest pair join two that Pierre delivered earlier this year. I have more of these kits so the fleet will continue to grow. I’ll use these to serve Walker Brothers – a quarry in Thorold.

Pierre built, painted, and lettered the kits, while I finished them with Kadee couplers, air hoses from BTS, and weathering.

I need to build more NS&T layout this winter, to accommodate my growing fleet and really bring the operation to life.
